With diabetes rates on the rise, Americans are paying more and more attention to pre-diabetes. This condition is a precursor of regular diabetes. With millions of Americans effected by this condition you may be wondering what it is and who’s at risk for pre-diabetes.
As mentioned above, pre-diabetes is a precursor to regular diabetes, meaning your body is already staring to have a problem completely breaking down foods, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. These levels have not yet reached those of a full-blown diabetic, but chances are good that someone in this pre-diabetes stage will develop diabetes within the next 10 years.
Some of the causes of pre-diabetes are lack of exercise, obesity and of course genes play into this as well. The good news is that even if you find yourself at the pre-diabetes stage, there is a lot you can do to prevent diabetes. Think of this as a huge last minute warning and expect to change your lifestyle, not as a sign that diabetes is unavoidable.
Now is a great time to talk to a nutritionist about making changes to your diet to stabilize your blood sugar, and it’s time to start getting some sort of exercise, like walking. If you haven’t exercised in quite some time, get your doctor’s ok first and start slowly. Even something as simple as taking a 15 minute walk each day, can make a huge positive impact on your overall health.
